The Athabasca oil sands, also known as the Athabasca tar sands, are large deposits of bitumen or extremely heavy crude oil, located in northeastern Alberta, Canada – roughly centred on the boomtown of Fort McMurray. The surface covering the three big oil sands deposits in Alberta totals 142,200 square kilometers, and of that, mining has disturbed about 4 percent. Sixty-five square kilometers have been reclaimed, and Gateway Hill makes up only a tiny fraction of that. About 20% of Alberta's oil sand deposits can be reached with surface mining.
