The index pricing period begins on the first Canadian business day of the calendar month prior to the contract month and ends on the Canadian business day prior to the NOS date (as published by Enbridge) in the same calendar month.

Oil prices in Canada plunged late last month, with the losses continuing throughout much of October. Canadian oil producers exposed to the low prices are now fetching around $40 to 50 per barrel less than their counterparts in the United States. Western Canada Select (WCS), which tracks heavy oil from Canada, Canadian Crude Index (^CC) The Canadian Crude Oil Index serves as a benchmark for oil produced in Canada. It allows investors to track the price, risk and volatility of the Canadian commodity. The CCI was launched by Auspice Capital Advisors in 2014. The Index moved from a day end posting to live in January 2016.

It is a unique benchmark crude produced exclusively in Western Canada and many producers' realized price is based on WCS, not WTI. WCS has become one of the largest heavy oil benchmarks in North America produced exclusively in Western Canada. Canadian Natural Resources is the largest contributor of heavy crude to WCS, estimated at 44% (Q1/2017 figures). The Canadian Crude Index™ (CCI™) was created by Auspice and represents a simple, transparent and liquid benchmark for oil that is produced in Canada. The CCI™ Reference Price represents the fixed price in USD per barrel for the three to four contract months that contribute to the index (see holdings below).
