Penny stocks – or stocks that trade below $5 per share – have gained a reputation as a high-risk, potentially high-reward marketplace for investors who are keen on capturing "the next big thing.". However, for every success story that exists with penny stocks, there are an equal number of frustrating losses. Penny stocks are high-risk securities with a small market capitalization that trade for a relatively low share price, typically outside of the major market exchanges.
