Since Great Canadian Oil Sands (now Suncor) started operation of its mine in 1967, bitumen has been extracted on a commercial scale from the Athabasca Oil Sands by surface mining. In the Athabasca sands there are very large amounts of bitumen covered by little overburden, making surface mining the most efficient method of extracting it. One of the few organically homegrown and wholly Canadian oil companies on our list, Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. was founded in 1973 (in Calgary, naturally) and spent its first 20 years or so

The estimated reserves of recoverable oil contained in the tar sands of Northern Alberta are in excess of 300 billion barrels. The area underlain by these sands is at least 13,000 square miles, which is equivalent to approximately one-twentieth of the area of the Province of Alberta. Nearly 90 per cent of the reserves occur in an irregular area some 150 miles long and 50 miles wide known as the Athabasca Tar Sands deposit. According to Greenpeace, the Canadian oil sands operations use 349 × 106 m 3 /a (12.3 × 109 cu ft/a) of water, twice the amount of water used by the city of Calgary. However, in SAGD operations, 90–95% of the water is recycled and only about 0.2 volume units of water is used per volume unit of bitumen produced.
