The perpetual inventory system is intended as an aid to material control. It is a system of stock control followed by stores department. The system follows a method of recording stores by which information about each receipt, issue and current balance of stock is always available. Perpetual stock management – also known as perpetual stock taking or a perpetual inventory system – is a type of inventory valuation whereby a business uses electronic tracking systems to continually record inventory. Small businesses can use several approaches to stock management. Accounting standards relate to the valuation of inventory, it is the responsibility of the directors to ensure this valuation is correct and a stock take is one method of control over this valuation, a control rather than a specific requirement in itself. Auditors (if necessary) will of course want some assurance on physical stock. How to stocktake There are a few steps that every business should follow when recording stock. The key difference between perpetual inventory system and continuous stock taking is that perpetual inventory system is a method of inventory valuation where the increase or decrease in inventory is recorded immediately following a sale or purchase whereas continuous stock taking refers to the exercise of physical checking or counting of inventory held by the entity on a regular basis.
