Pips trading currency

A pip is the smallest price move that an exchange rate can make based on market convention. Most currency pairs are priced to four decimal places and the smallest change is the last (fourth) decimal point. This is the equivalent of 1/100 of 1% or one basis point. Traders often use pips to reference gains, or losses. A pip measures the amount of change in the exchange rate for a currency pair, and is calculated using last decimal point. Since most major currency pairs are priced to 4 decimal places, the smallest change is that of the last decimal point which is equivalent to 1/100 of 1%, or one basis point. The currency you used to open your forex trading account will determine the pip value of many currency pairs. If you opened a U.S. dollar-denominated account, then for currency pairs in which the U.S. dollar is the second, or quote, currency, the pip value will be $10 for a standard lot, $1 for a mini lot, and $0.10 for a micro lot. What are pips in forex trading? A “PIP” – which stands for Point in Percentage - is the unit of measure used by forex traders to define the smallest change in value between two currencies.
